The Art of Remembrance: A Guide to Honoring Ancestors with Flowers & Light
In every culture, there are beautiful traditions dedicated to remembering and honoring our ancestors. In India, we light diyas during Diwali, offer prayers during Shradh, and fill our homes with the fragrance of incense and flowers, keeping the memory of our loved ones eternally bright. Across the world, in the vibrant culture of Mexico, a similar celebration of life and memory unfolds in a festival called Día de los Muertos—the Day of the Dead.
This joyous occasion is not about mourning; it is a heartfelt reunion with the souls of the departed, a celebration of the lives they lived. And at the very heart of this tradition is a flower we in India know and love: the Marigold, our beloved Genda Phool.
At Lovenspire, we are inspired by this universal language of love and remembrance. Our collection of decorative flowers, especially our vibrant marigold garlands, is designed to bridge these beautiful traditions. Whether you are creating a sacred space for Pitru Paksha, decorating your home for Diwali puja, or simply wish to embrace a beautiful way to honor your ancestors, this guide will explore the profound symbolism that connects us all. Our decor is perfect for bringing warmth and tradition into homes across the USA, UK, Canada, and Australia.
The Language of Flowers: A Universal Symbol of Love and Light
Flowers are central to ceremonies of remembrance, symbolizing the beauty and fleeting nature of life. While many blossoms are used, the marigold holds a special place in both Indian and Mexican traditions, acting as a bridge of light between worlds.

The Guiding Light: In both cultures, the marigold is the most important flower of remembrance. Its brilliant orange and yellow hues are seen as a representation of the sun's divine energy. In India, genda mala (marigold garlands) are used in almost every auspicious occasion to signify purity and positivity. In Día de los Muertos traditions, the flower's strong fragrance is believed to guide the spirits of the ancestors back to their families for a joyful reunion. |

Peace & Honour: White and yellow chrysanthemums are symbols of peace, truth, and paying honor to the departed. Their use in memorial services brings a sense of tranquility and celebrates a life lived with integrity. |
Rose |

Love & Devotion: A universal symbol of love, roses are used to represent the pure and enduring love (prem) and devotion (bhakti) that connects the living with those who have passed. Red roses signify deep love, while white roses symbolize purity and peace. |

Purity & Innocence: The delicate, cloud-like white blossoms of baby's breath represent purity and innocence. They are often used to honor the pure souls of children and ancestors, adding an ethereal touch to any arrangement. |
Genda Phool: The Sacred Marigold, A Bridge of Flowers
No flower is more intertwined with Indian festivities than the Genda Phool. From weddings to Diwali, these vibrant blossoms are essential. We create long garlands to decorate our homes and temples, offer them during puja, and see them as a symbol of light, celebration, and divine blessings.
Interestingly, this same flower, known as cempasúchil in Mexico, holds a parallel significance. Ancient Aztec legend tells of the flower being a gift from the sun god, its bright petals holding the sun's warmth to light the way for the spirits. Families create paths of marigold petals leading to their homes, much like we create beautiful rangoli at our doorsteps to welcome guests and the goddess Lakshmi during Diwali.
Our artificial marigold flower strings are perfect for any of these traditions. Use them as Diwali decorations, as a backdrop for your home temple (mandir), for wedding ceremonies like Haldi and Mehendi, or to create your own sacred altar of remembrance.
Building a Sacred Altar: A Space for Remembrance
In many cultures, creating a special altar is a way to honor ancestors. In the Día de los Muertos tradition, this is called an ofrenda. It is not for worship, but is a beautiful, personal tribute to welcome the spirits home. The concept is similar to the sacred space we create for our deities during a puja, where every element has a special meaning.
The Four Elements of Life
A traditional altar incorporates the four essential elements of nature, which are fundamental in Hindu philosophy as well:
-
Fire (Agni): Represented by candles. A candle is lit for each departed soul, its flame a guiding light to illuminate their path, much like we light a diya to dispel darkness and invite divine presence.
-
Wind (Vayu): Represented by papel picado, intricately cut paper banners. Their gentle movement signifies the arrival of the spirits, a subtle sign of their presence in the air around us.
-
Water (Jal): A glass of fresh water is placed on the altar. This is to quench the thirst of the spirits after their long journey, a ritual of hospitality familiar in Indian traditions of offering water to guests and ancestors.
-
Earth (Prithvi): Represented by food. The altar is laden with the favorite foods of the deceased. This act of offering nourishment is deeply connected to the Indian concept of prasad or bhog—offering food as a sign of love and reverence.
Other Key Offerings
-
Photographs: A photo of the ancestor is the heart of the altar, a focal point for remembrance and love.
-
Flowers: Marigolds (Genda Phool) are essential. They are arranged in vases, woven into garlands, and their petals are scattered to create a fragrant, welcoming path.
-
Incense: Copal incense is traditionally burned to purify the space and carry prayers to the heavens, much like we use dhoop or agarbatti in our daily pujas to cleanse the atmosphere and create a spiritual ambiance.
-
Personal Items: Favorite objects of the departed—a book, a pair of spectacles, a favorite piece of clothing—are placed on the altar to make them feel welcomed and cherished.
Artistic Symbols of Life's Cycle
Calaveras: The Smiling Skulls
A unique aspect of this tradition is the use of calaveras, or skulls, often made of sugar. It is vital to understand that these are not symbols of fear or horror. Instead, these brightly decorated, smiling skulls represent the departed souls and celebrate the "sweetness of life". They are a form of folk art that acknowledges death as a natural, whimsical part of the circle of life, a concept that resonates with the Hindu philosophy of samsara. The name of the departed is often written on the forehead as a personal tribute.
La Catrina: The Elegant Icon of Remembrance
The most famous image is that of La Catrina, a female skeleton dressed in elegant, European-style clothing. This figure was created by artist José Guadalupe Posada as a gentle reminder that beneath all our worldly possessions and status, we are all the same in the eyes of death. She has become a beloved symbol of embracing life's full cycle with grace and dignity, a powerful message of staying true to one's roots while navigating the world.
