• Fire (Agni): Represented by candles. A candle is lit for each departed soul, its flame a guiding light to illuminate their path, much like we light a diya to dispel darkness and invite divine presence.

• Wind (Vayu): Represented by papel picado, intricately cut paper banners. Their gentle movement signifies the arrival of the spirits, a subtle sign of their presence in the air around us.

• Water (Jal): A glass of fresh water is placed on the altar. This is to quench the thirst of the spirits after their long journey, a ritual of hospitality familiar in Indian traditions of offering water to guests and ancestors.

• Earth (Prithvi): Represented by food. The altar is laden with the favorite foods of the deceased. This act of offering nourishment is deeply connected to the Indian concept of prasad or bhog—offering food as a sign of love and reverence.

Other Key Offerings

• Photographs: A photo of the ancestor is the heart of the altar, a focal point for remembrance and love.

• Flowers: Marigolds (Genda Phool) are essential. They are arranged in vases, woven into garlands, and their petals are scattered to create a fragrant, welcoming path.

• Incense: Copal incense is traditionally burned to purify the space and carry prayers to the heavens, much like we use dhoop or agarbatti in our daily pujas to cleanse the atmosphere and create a spiritual ambiance.

• Personal Items: Favorite objects of the departed—a book, a pair of spectacles, a favorite piece of clothing—are placed on the altar to make them feel welcomed and cherished.

Calaveras: The Smiling Skulls

A unique aspect of this tradition is the use of calaveras, or skulls, often made of sugar. It is vital to understand that these are not symbols of fear or horror. Instead, these brightly decorated, smiling skulls represent the departed souls and celebrate the "sweetness of life". They are a form of folk art that acknowledges death as a natural, whimsical part of the circle of life, a concept that resonates with the Hindu philosophy of samsara. The name of the departed is often written on the forehead as a personal tribute.
